Toyota 4Runner 4.0L Rear End Repair Information

Rear Leaf Spring Installation

The rear suspension of the Toyota 4Runner consists of leaf springs and shock absorbers. The leaf springs are held together using a series of mounts and shackles. The front leaf spring mount needs to be tightened down to 115 ft-lbs. While the shackle bolts need to be tightened down to 67 ft-lbs. There is also a centering bolt on the leaf springs which should be tightened down to 33 ft-lbs if removed.

Rear Differential Torque Specs

On the Toyota 4Runner rear axle the U bolts need to be tightened down to 90 ft-lbs. The ring gear bolts get tightened down to 71 ft-lbs. if with an e locker and 92 if without the carrier bearing caps get tightened down to 83 ft-lbs. The differential drain plug should be tightened down to 36 ft-lbs. While the backing plate to the axle get tightened down to 50 ft-lbs.

Rear Shocks Installation

To replace the rear shocks on a Toyota 4Runner you will need to remove two sets of bolts/nuts located at the bottom and top of the shock. Both of these fasteners can be accessed from underneath the vehicle by jacking it up and removing the wheel. To uninstall the old shock simply just remove both of the fasteners and the part will come out. When installing the new part reverse the procedure and tighten up the bottom bolt to 75 ft-lbs and then the upper nut to 15 ft-lbs or about until the rubber grommets push outwards.
